The new container port in Barcadera is in business since February 15, 2016. The majority of ships and cargo will be handled at the new Multi Cargo Sea Terminal in Barcadera. The port in Oranjestad will be used only for cruise ships and car carriers. The car carriers will also dock at the new port in Barcadera later this year.
The new port was planned for more than 20 years. Last week, a majority of the containers stored in Oranjestad were moved to the new port. Astec (Aruba Stevedoring Company) opened its doors of their brand new office in Barcadera. The first cargo vessel unloaded at the new Barcadera port yesterday.
The port in Oranjestad will be redeveloped starting later this year. The available land will be transferred to interested investors in sublease and developed for business, housing and boutique hotels, among others.
