Waste-to-Energy in Free Zone Aruba

Ecogas Free Zone NV (former Ecotech Free Zone NV) is Aruba’s first waste-to-energy company. Ecogas will convert the majority of Aruba’s waste into energy, which will be used by WEB NV (Aruba’s Water and Energy Company). Recyclables will still be extracted from the waste and exported.
See video below for a demonstration.
This project was first announced during the first Europe Meets the Americas conference in May 2013. An MOU was signed between Ecotech Free Zone NV, WEB NV and Free Zone Aruba, and makes use of the beneficial free zone policy implemented by the Government of Aruba.
Freddy Kelkboom, managing director of Ecogas, is very proud to announce that Ecogas is the first waste-to-energy company in the Caribbean and South America. Not only does the project significantly reduce the waste problem on the island, it also helps the island become less dependent on imported fuel. The company is looking forward to more similar projects in the region to help the region to become more sustainable. Aruba is a great example.
The company’s new gasification technology, the first of its kind throughout the region, will also serve as a green technology showcase for Latin America and the Caribbean while serving as a green technology education instrument for Aruba’s schoolchildren. This project plays an important role in the islands vision to become fully independent from fossil fuels by 2020.
The new project will produce 2 megawatts, approximately 2% of the islands total energy need.
Free Zone Aruba NV is excited about this great achievement. A milestone demonstrating the key role Aruba’s free zone can play in developing Aruba as a green energy and technology hub for the entire region.
